Evaluating the Effects of Membranes, Cell Designs, and Flow Configurations on the Performance of Cu-GDEs in Converting CO₂ to CO

In this study, we evaluate the effect of cell configuration parameters on electrochemical reduction CO2 using Cu gas-diffusion electrodes (Cu-GDEs), including use proton- or anion-exchange membranes, flow configuration, and Nafion content used in ink formulation to prepare Cu-GDEs. Using a (i) containing Sustainion membrane, (ii) allowing liquid catholyte anolyte, (iii) providing convective supply flow-through mode, outstanding faradaic efficiencies toward carbon monoxide (FECO = ∼85%, at −0.88 V vs RHE, 50 mA·cm–2) were obtained. We attribute performance an efficient desorption transport CO exit reactor, agreement with remarkably low FE ethylene applied potentials. Most importantly, optimizing 10 wt %, could be maintained for least h continuous operation high FECO ∼85%.
